Pirkka chair, honey - black

Artek's Pirkka chair is part of the Pirkka series designed by Ilmari Tapiovaara in 1955. The Pirkka chair features a black lacquered birch frame with a stained and lacquered solid pine seat and backrest. The tapered legs and braces of the frame combine beautifully with the curvy lines of the pinewood pieces of the Pirkka chair.

The Pirkka series, which imitates Finnish peasant furniture, is one of the most popular Finnish furniture series of all time and has also gained a worldwide reputation. The Pirkka series consists of a table, chair, bar stool, bench, and a stool, which was the first piece designed for the range. The solid wood Pirkka series was originally manufactured by Laukaan Puu. In 2010 Artek acquired the rights to manufacture designs by Ilmari Tapiovaara, also including the Pirkka series.

Artek was founded in 1935 by four young idealists – Alvar and Aino Aalto, Nils-Gustav Hahl and Maire Gullichsen published a design manifesto inspired by functionalism, stating that Artek’s aim was “to sell furniture and to promote modern culture of habitation by exhibitions and other means”. Since its foundation, Artek has played in the intersection of design, architecture, and art, making Finnish design and Alvar Aalto's furniture known all over the world.
