Piet Hein counter stool with armrest 65 cm, black - lacquered walnut

The Piet Hein counter stool from Sibast was named after its designer: Danish designer Piet Hein developed the chair for almost a decade, completing it in 1968. However, it took more than 50 years before the chair was finally taken into production by Sibast Furniture.

The design of the Piet Hein counter stool revolves around a superellipse – an elliptical form named by Hein himself, which he first used in the famous roundabout on Sergels Torg in Stockholm. Hein was, in fact, a polymath, whose career ranged from mathematics and architecture to poetry. He later utilized the harmonious elliptical shape in many other works, such as in the seat and back of the Piet Hein chairs.

The seat material of the Piet Hein counter stool is bent wood veneer, and the dynamically positioned, slightly sloping legs and armrests are made of steel. Thanks to the slender yet sturdy design, the Piet Hein stools are well suited for both home and restaurant use.

Danish furniture manufacturer Sibast was established in 1908, when Peder Olsen Sibast opened his small carpenter’s workshop in the Danish countryside. His son Helge Sibast was born the same year. Helge grew up with the workshop, and in the 1940s he and his siblings Ole and Emma took over the company. Besides a carpenter, Helge also proved to be a skillful designer, and his designs, such as the Sibast chairs No 7 and 8, made Sibast Furniture famous also outside of Denmark. In the 1950s Sibast collaborated successfully with the Danish furniture designer Arne Vodder, and in the 1960s Sibast chairs made their way even to the White House.
