Kide carpet, knotted, off-white

The Kide rug is part of Sera Helsinki’s Juuret collection. The hand-knotted and woven rug is made in Ethiopia. The beautiful and refined nomadic pattern of the Kide rug catches the eye in any space.

Kide rugs are made with 100% wool, without using any dye or chemical treatment. The shade of the natural wool may thus vary slightly from rug to rug. The wool rugs are handmade according to centuries-old traditions, and therefore the rugs’ size may also vary slightly. Untreated sheep's wool also contains the wool's own fat, i.e., lanolin, which naturally repels dirt, making wool rugs very easy to keep clean.

Sera Helsinki was established in 2016 with the idea of combining Finnish design with ancient Ethiopian handcraft traditions. The eco-friendly products are designed in Finland and handcrafted in Ethiopia from pure natural materials. The wool used in their products is hand-threaded and comes from peasant farmers in northern Ethiopia. The wool is all natural – it is not dyed or bleached at any stage of the production.

In addition to sustainability, Sera Helsinki also strives to improve the living standards of the artisans that make their products. The company’s founder Anna Suoheimo lived in Ethiopia herself, leading her to establish Sera Helsinki with the mission to empower the most vulnerable groups in the country. In cooperation with non-governmental organizations and local artisans, Sera Helsinki provides training and work for single mothers and people with disabilities, whose situation in Ethiopia is particularly difficult.
