J39 Mogensen chair, 75th Anniversary Edition

Fredericia's J39 chair is an icon of Danish furniture design created in 1947 by architect Børge Mogensen.  To celebrate the chair's 75th anniversary in 2022, Fredericia launched it in a special edition inspired by the original 1947 design. Instead of the usual paper cord seat, the anniversary chair has a rush seat in sedge grass, just like the original version Mogensen himself had in his living room.

The minimalistic, even puristic J39 chair has been in continuous production since its conception. Mogensen designed the chair originally for FDB, the Danish Consumers’ Co-operative Society, whose main idea was to offer functionalist and democratic design for the people – as the J39 chair gained popularity, it also earned the nickname ‘The People’s Chair’. A timeless and organic combination of natural materials, the J39 chair works perfectly as a dining chair as well as in the living room or office.
