Artek's Domus chair was designed by Ilmari Tapiovaara in 1946. Known as “The Finn Chair”, the Domus Chair achieved great success internationally. Artek’s classic piece of furniture has elevated homes around the world ever since it was made. With its timeless design, Domus chair is an ergonomic piece of furniture and a beloved classic of Finnish design.

Designed to meet the diverse needs of student housing, the iconic chair was created as part of a series of furniture for the Domus Academica student housing complex in Helsinki, drawn by architect Pauli Salomaa. The interior and furniture design of the complex was the first large-scale project for the Finnish interior architect and designer Tapiovaara and his wife Annikki Tapiovaara.

Artek’s stackable design chair served in various spaces from the student rooms and cafeteria to conference rooms. Artek was founded in 1935 by four young idealists – Alvar and Aino Aalto, Nils-Gustav Hahl and Maire Gullichsen published a design manifesto inspired by functionalism, stating that Artek’s aim was “to sell furniture and to promote modern culture of habitation by exhibitions and other means”. Since its foundation, Artek has played in the intersection of design, architecture, and art, making Finnish design and Alvar Aalto's furniture known all over the world.
