Aslak chair, black - brown leather

Artek's Aslak chair, designed by Ilmari Tapiovaara in 1946, is a design classic. The chair has a stackable structure that makes it fit perfectly for cafés and restaurants as well as private residences. Tapiovaara designed the chair so comfortable that you can sit on it even for an extended period of time. It is also perfect for a conference room or an office. 

Ilmari Tapiovaara aimed the chair to merge the economical use of materials and functionality, but also he wanted the design language to express certain plasticity which you can see in the chair's angular feet and bent armrests. The Aslak chair was originally designed as early as the 1940s, but it only made into production in 1958, when it was possible to manufacture the chair in mass production.

Ilmari Tapiovaara

Artek was founded in 1935 by four young idealists – Alvar and Aino Aalto, Nils-Gustav Hahl and Maire Gullichsen published a design manifesto inspired by functionalism, stating that Artek’s aim was “to sell furniture and to promote modern culture of habitation by exhibitions and other means”. Since its foundation, Artek has played in the intersection of design, architecture, and art, making Finnish design and Alvar Aalto's furniture known all over the world.
