Moomin mug, Opera

The Moomins take the stage! The Opera Moomin mug, designed exclusively for Scope Japan, is a tribute to the collaboration between Tove Jansson and Ilkka Kuusisto that led to the creation of the world’s first Moomin opera. This limited-edition mug was released to celebrate Scope’s 25th anniversary and became available exclusively in Japan on 1 April 2025. The illustrations on the Opera mug are based on Tove Jansson’s original sketches created for a poster and booklet for the Moomin opera. In addition to the mug, the collection includes two matching plates. The artwork for the tableware was created by Moomin Arabia illustrator Parvati Pillai.

On the front of the mug, Moomintroll appears in full opera attire – wearing a flowing cape, a feathered hat, and holding a harp. In the background, Snufkin, Moominmamma and Moominpappa are busy working on the opera’s script.

On the other side, Fillyjonk, adorned with pearls, is seen alongside the Hattifatteners, Little My, and the opera’s unexpected star, Misabel. A decorative pattern runs along the top edge of the mug, adding a festive and classical operatic touch.

The inspiration for the Opera collection and the collaboration with Scope began back in 2012, when Scope’s founder, Mr. Hirai, received an original Moomin opera poster as a gift from a friend. The idea simmered for years, until the dream of a joint project finally came to life – at just the right moment, and in honour of Scope’s anniversary.

Arabia’s first Moomin tableware appeared in the 1950s, but larger-scale production began in 1990. The cheerful characters featured on the ceramics are based on Tove Jansson’s original illustrations. The Moomin collection is built on the timeless and functional Teema series, designed by Kaj Franck.

Parvati Pillai

Moomin Arabia is a collection of Moomin products by Arabia, one of Finland's most renowned brands. The residents of Moominvalley first appeared as ceramic designs in the 1950s when artist Tove Jansson created Moomin-themed dishes and her mother, Signe "Ham" Hammarsten Jansson, crafted ceramic Moomin figures. In the 1990s, Moomin mugs designed by illustrator Tove Slotte quickly became favourites among both children and adults. Since then, Moomin Arabia products have been cherished as delightful everyday items and valuable collectables worldwide. Today, the collection includes not only dishware but also textiles.
