Lilla Åland children chair, high, blue - green

The children's chair from Stolab's Lilla Åland collection is a smaller version of the classic stick-back chair, designed by Carl Malmsten, created with the youngest members of the family in mind. In addition to the size, the chair has also been modified so that even a smaller child can sit on it comfortably: the edges of the seat have been rounded and a wooden footrest has been added to the front of the chair.

The original Lilla Åland chair was designed in 1942 after Malmsten’s visit to the Finström Church on the Åland island that is located between Sweden and Finland – he was inspired by a stack of stick-back chairs he saw in the church and decided to create his own version of them. The end result was a modern Windsor-style chair named Lilla Åland as a reference to the chair’s original inspiration. The wooden chair is manufactured at Stolab's own factory in Smålandsstenar, Sweden, and is available in a number of colours and finishes.

Carl Malmsten

Stolab is a Swedish furniture manufacturer with roots dating back to the early 20th century. Founded in 1907 in the village of Smålandsstenar, the furniture factory first produced only Windsor-style chairs from birch wood and initially operated simply under the name Stolfabriken, “the chair factory”, although the name was later converted to Stolfabriksaktiebolaget. In 1981, the name was shortened to its current form, and the company has since been known as Stolab. Although the company's range has expanded over the years to other wooden furniture, the wooden stick-back chairs – that it continues to manufacture in the village of Smålandsstenar – are still its best-known product and the basis of its esteemed brand.
