Cumulus vase, 17 cm, clear

The Cumulus vase was designed by glass artist Markku Salo in 1983, manufactured by Nuutajärvi Glass, and it is made of mould-blown glass. The vase gets its name from a puffy, cumulus-cloud-like shape, and it is patterned with a beautiful, dense vertical striped texture.

The Cumulus vase has been produced in both clear and blue in five different sizes and was in production between 1983 and 1994. There has also been secondary production of the vase in the 2000s. The Cumulus series included a votive candler holder, an oil lantern, eight different vases and three ashtrays.

Markku Salo

Nuutajärvi Glassworks was established in Urjala in 1793, and until 2014 it was the oldest glass factory still operating in Finland. The Nuutajärvi glass factory area is nowadays listed among the nationally important built cultural environments by The National Board of Antiquities. During its long history, Nuutajärvi Glassworks manufactured everything from window glass to design glass.

Kaj Franck was the longest-running artistic director of the Nuutajärvi Glassworks between 1951 and 1973. The glass factory also employed several other well-known Finnish glass designers such as Gunnel Nyman, Saara Hopea, Oiva Toikka, Heikki Orvola and Kerttu Nurminen. Independent glass designers and artists still work and manufacture glass objects at the Nuutajärvi glass factory area. The Nuutajärvi Glass Museum Prykäri, designed by Kaj Franck, also locates in the area.
