Aalto stool 60 Meiré, birch-yellow-black-white

When the Aalto stool 60 celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2013, designer Mike Meiré was given the opportunity to create a series of special editions of Artek’s three-legged classic. He dressed the iconic L-shaped legs and round seat in bold colour combinations that give the stool a completely new look. “I believe you should only change classics when people have become very familiar with them. Suddenly, they can rediscover something they already know. This kind of surprise creates a moment of newness“, said the German designer.

The Aalto stool 60, designed by Alvar Aalto, is one of the icons of modern furniture design. First introduced in 1933, the stool became an instant success due to its bent legs and simple, versatile form.

Artek was founded in 1935 by four young idealists – Alvar and Aino Aalto, Nils-Gustav Hahl and Maire Gullichsen published a design manifesto inspired by functionalism, stating that Artek’s aim was “to sell furniture and to promote modern culture of habitation by exhibitions and other means”.
