Aalto armchair 402 "Atelje", birch - brown

Artek’s Armchair 402, was designed by Alvar Aalto in 1933. Also known as Atelje, the armchair is a modern masterpiece that was first presented by Aalto at the Milan Triennale in 1933. Capturing the essence of Finnish architect and designer, the Atelje armchair features a functional form that serves as the perfect complement to minimalist spaces. 

Compared to Artek’s Tank chair, the Atelje armchair has a more lightweight structure. The seat height of the armchair is five centimetres higher than in the Tank chair. The armchair is available in many colours and finishes. This design chair works well in various decors, not only mid-century modern inspired ones.

The flexible wood frame makes the armchair extremely comfortable. With its slightly tilted back, Atelje armchair offers comfortable seating while still remaining in an upright position.

The armrests of the chair are formed from a single piece that is then split in half. Even if the wood changes over time, Artek’s Atelje armchair remains perfectly balanced.

Alvar Aalto

Artek was founded in 1935 by four young idealists – Alvar and Aino Aalto, Nils-Gustav Hahl and Maire Gullichsen published a design manifesto inspired by functionalism, stating that Artek’s aim was “to sell furniture and to promote modern culture of habitation by exhibitions and other means”. Since its foundation, Artek has played in the intersection of design, architecture, and art, making Finnish design and Alvar Aalto's furniture known all over the world.
