The story of the chair goes back to the 1980s, when the family welcomed their first grandchild. Kukkapuro’s wife, Irmeli, wished for a chair that would be comfortable for gently rocking the new arrival. From that wish, the soft and practical form of the A-509 rocking chair was born.

The A-509 rocking chair brings together all the elements that define Kukkapuro’s design: a lightweight tubular steel frame, padded leather cushions, and sculptural runners. The result is a chair that is slender, timelessly stylish, and exceptionally pleasant to sit in. Yrjö Kukkapuro

Yrjö Kukkapuro (1933–2025) was one of the most prominent names in Finnish furniture design. Having begun his career as early as the 1950s, Kukkapuro always aimed for a seamless combination of aesthetics and functionality, regardless of whether he was working on more artistic project or something entirely practical, such as an office chair collection. User experience and ergonomics were central to his design work: “Does it make any sense to design a chair which is not good to sit on?” he often said. During his long career, Kukkapuro designed numerous pieces of furniture that have become sought-after design classics, such as the iconic Remmi series and the Ateljee armchair and sofa.
