Celebrate Nordic design history with vintage fabric prints

Representing creativity and freedom of expression, Marimekko’s Unikko fabric is a stellar part of the Finnish design canon. The notorious poppy pattern of the Unikko fabric originated in 1964 when designer Maija Isola wanted to revolutionise Marimekko’s collection, which mostly focused on abstract prints. The company’s founder, Armi Ratia, wanted to steer clear of floral patterns – which, in turn, inspired Maija Isola to design the renowned Unikko fabric. This act of creative rebellion resulted in the Unikko fabric becoming Marimekko’s most iconic print.

Designed by Alvar Aalto in 1954, the timeless Siena fabric is a true, graphic stunner that looks flawless on a variety of surfaces found in contemporary homes. Full of geometric appeal, Artek’s Siena fabric took its name from the Italian city that Alvar Aalto adored – to be more precise, the classic Siena fabric is said to be inspired by the medieval cathedral on Piazza del Duomo. Whether used to its full effect when made into full-length curtains or applied more subtly in the form of cushion covers, the black and white Siena fabric takes your style stakes to a whole new level.
