Pirkka table, 180 x 80 cm, white

Artek's Pirkka table is part of the Pirkka series designed by Ilmari Tapiovaara in 1955. The white Pirkka table features a solid birch frame and tabletop. The round and tapered legs and braces of the Pirkka table support the tabletop which is composed of two solid birch wood pieces. 

The Pirkka series, which imitates Finnish peasant furniture, is one of the most popular Finnish furniture series of all time and has also gained a worldwide reputation. The Pirkka series consists of a table, chair, bar stool, bench, and a stool, which was the first piece designed for the range. The solid wood Pirkka series was originally manufactured by Laukaan Puu. In 2010 Artek acquired the rights to manufacture designs by Ilmari Tapiovaara, also including the Pirkka series.

Artek was founded in 1935 by four young idealists – Alvar and Aino Aalto, Nils-Gustav Hahl and Maire Gullichsen published a design manifesto inspired by functionalism, stating that Artek’s aim was “to sell furniture and to promote modern culture of habitation by exhibitions and other means”. Since its foundation, Artek has played in the intersection of design, architecture, and art, making Finnish design and Alvar Aalto's furniture known all over the world.
